Rube Goldbergs are contraptions that go through a very long process of events to accomplish a simple task. The task can be something real but most of the time is something silly such as delivering a melon to G-Man.

Good Parts and Tips

Dominoes

Of course, the most basic of all Rube Goldbergs. Most have them, dominoes. They are good for separating gaps and are fun to watch. A domino effect can easily be created by spawning blast doors (or other props) in a line close together. When shot with a pistol or hit with other parts of the Goldberg these will fall over one after the other.

Dominoes

Hurt Thrusters

New to Gmod 10 is the ability to have thrusters activate when damaged. You can create a Hurt Thruster by clicking the "Activate When Damaged" check box before you create it. So, for example, I could have a fat can on a slider going up. Then when an explosion from a SLAM goes off next to it the thruster will take off and zoom into the sky.

Thrusters

Rotational Dominoes

These are more complicated to create but an interesting effect is having a long column type prop on an axis sideways (usually on top of something, or on a flat surface) then a normal domino or something else will hit one and it will turn. You of course have another one, flipped next to it. So when the first one spins it hits the second one. Causing it to spin the other direction. This can continue for a bit until it runs out of juice.

Rotate

Falling Sliders

An interesting thing to do is to have an object at an angle (towards the ground) on a slider. Now put a breakable weld on it. The number for the force required to break can be tricky to acquire, but you can get it after a few tries. Of course to remember to unfreeze the prop. Then something like a big domino or maybe explosion can break the weld and it will slide down to the ground.

Sliders

Upward Rotation

A cool combination is using a Hurt Thruster (read above for more info) on a long pole axied to the wall. Lay it down and it will just sit there until something damages the thruster and pushes the column up, rotating it, into something above. Be creative, there are lots of things that can cause damage to a thruster. Even simply slamming something into it really hard can cause it damage and make it activate.

Upwards Thrust

Rolling Wheels

A simple round object can be hit by a domino or something similar and begin to roll down a hill with gravity. In my screenshot I show a domino hitting a wheel that was resting on the ledge. Then after being hit, rolled down the slope ready to hit more dominoes.

This can also be done with a normal prop with the Physics Properties set to ice. Which will allow it to slide across the ground as if it were rolling, as the name says it's like a piece of ice on ice.

SLAMs

Something most people don't think about are SLAMs. That weapon can be very useful in triggering various things in your Goldberg. Before I explain, GM10 doesn't allow you to have them by default. First, in the console enable sv_cheats 1. Now return to the game and press P. You'll have all weapons now.

Anyways, just as your enemies tripped over tripmines causing explosions, SLAMs are no different. Like my example screenshot. (Click to enlarge) I have a SLAM on a Domino across the building. Now the dominoes closest to the camera are falling over, tripping the SLAM. Therefor causing an explosion soon afterward.

A tripmine trigger.

I have recently gotten into build Rube Goldberg devices myself, and I found the example contraptions above useful for building my Goldbergs. View the official page for my Goldbergs here.

After have building Domino Mania, I decided to make another Goldberg that looked more professional. The end result was this. Once again, additional info can be viewed at my official Goldberg archive thread here.

I went all-out time on this one. There's no excitement to it, nothing special. Just pure length. Once again, it can be viewed at my Goldberg archive thread here.
